Minority Languages: The Case of Frisian |

After completing this course, students are experts on the Frisian multilingual situation and can partake in debates about language governance in the Netherlands. Students become able to use facts to form an opinion about the status of Frisian, as opposed to that of other minority languages. Students are also able to apply their knowledge and first hand experiences attained in the course to minority language communities throughout the world. Furthermore, students acquire capability of conducting and presenting individual research. |

This course presents Friesland as a laboratory for studying multilingualism in action. Students are offered first-hand knowledge of language use in Friesland through excursions to settings in which multilingualism or minority language use are salient issues. Remaining classes deal with topics particularly applicable to minority language communities. Excursions typically consist of visits to Frisian cultural and government institutions as well as to corporate and educational institutions. In the lectures experts from a number of different fields introduce topics of theoretical relevance that students will get a chance to test empirically themselves. In the final class of the course students are expected to hold a poster presentation about a small research project. |
