Leerdoelen Recall knowledge of theories of multilingual education, paying particular attention to developments in the fields of sociolinguistics and educational linguistics.

Synthesise in a compelling way the main ideas and research in the field of educational linguistics.
Specialize further in the field of educational linguistics and navigate their way independently through the academic literature.
Omschrijving Linguistic and cultural diversity is a reality and an aim in each society across the globe and, as such, also in educational settings. This course presents bi- and multilingual education as a laboratory for pupils, students and teachers in action. Students are offered first-hand knowledge of bi-/tri- and multilingual education at various levels and with respect to a range of target languages: dominant or majority languages, traditional and new foreign languages as well as regional and minority/minoritised and immigrant languages. Lectures focus on a selection of topics deriving from many settings but also particularly applicable to Frisian which functions as the example. Classes will consist of lectures and exercises on several topics around multilingual education and on the analysis of current research results. Experts will introduce education topics of theoretical relevance and with regard to their applicability in practice. An excursion will take place to a school in Friesland. Students will also experiment with multilingual education during their course assignments.
