Leerdoelen The student knows and understands the history of discoveries and exploitation in polar areas from a multidisciplinary context and is able to discuss historic, economic and political developments on these subjects.
Omschrijving Lectures in this course will address the exploitation of mineral and animal resources in the world’s Polar Regions. In both modern times and the recent past, over-exploitation—by, for example, European coal miners and whalers—has posed serious problems for Arctic ecosystems. We will discuss a range of topics related to natural wealth around the poles, including (but not limited to) environmental protection policy, the geopolitics of exploitation, and both natural and cultural sustainability.
This course consists of 2x2 lectures per week, and will end with a traditional written exam.
