Omschrijving In this course, students will learn how historical research can be presented to a wide audience in various different contexts, such as museum exhibitions, or by means of documentaries and other media. An important part of the seminar is the reflection on and evaluation of existing documentaries, museums and exhibitions. Furthermore, under the guidance of lecturers and guest lecturers, students will learn how to improve their audience-oriented writing skills and to create appealing “storylines” based on rigorous historical research of textual, audio-visual and material traces of the past. Individually and in groups, students will explore various interactive ways to present the storylines for an exhibition or documentary. The latter can take the shape of, for instance, a podcast or video essay.

Besides these more practical aspects, this seminar will also revolve around the theme “contested heritage”, with the current “new” iconoclasm, directed towards statues of controversial historical figures, as the prime example. This particular case study will allow for critical reflection on the ideological, political, economic, and scholarly ramifications of contested history, as well as the role public historians can play in these complex dynamics.
