Omschrijving | This course will explore European multicultural narratives of childhood and youth constructing identities across national and linguistic divides. Underage Europeans have limited legal and political agency: most of the literature for children and young people is written, produced and mediated by adults. The study of literature for and about young people requires an interdisciplinary approach that connects the themes outlined in children’s books to particular frames of book production, reading, aesthetics and pedagogy. Our course texts and methods will foreground Europe as a trans- and multicultural arena. We will problematise, among other issues, practices of translation and the politics of abridgement. Please note that the course outline may differ according to the language track. For example, the Dutch group will focus on multicultural Young Adult literature in the Netherlands. |
