Omschrijving | What happens when we read a text, watch a film, look at a painting? Is there a difference between dealing with literature and art and consuming other texts and images? How can we explain and conceptualize the fact that different people look at the same work in different ways and take a literary text as “a picnic to which the author brings the words and the reader the meaning” (Northrop Frye)? One prominent strand of approaches dealing which such questions are theories of aesthetic reception and reader response. A key idea in many of these approaches is that in works of film, literature and art let the recipients actively participate in the construction of meaning – for example by providing “gaps“ to be “filled“ by the readers and viewers. Early film theory focused on montage, the space between the frames and the cut as crucial aesthetic elements of the new medium, while contemporary approaches describe “gaps” at different narrative and audiovisual levels. Literary scholars Roman Ingarden and Wolfgang Iser developed concepts of textual “indeterminacy“. And art historians such as Wolfgang Kemp and Gottfried Boehm discussed “empty spaces“ as key elements in modern paintings. In this seminar, we will discuss such media-specific aesthetic concepts and possible interconnections between them, using a wide range of films, texts and images as examples. |
