The World of Women in Early Medieval Literature |
Leerdoelen |
- critically analyse three different medieval literary traditions in their respective cultural contexts; - compare the three socio-cultural traditions and place them in a broader Northwest European context; - assess the applicability of critical methodologies to the traditions; - conduct independent research on a topic related to the course theme and present that research. |
Omschrijving |
The tutorial focuses on the complex roles of women in Anglo-Saxon, early Scandinavian and early Irish society and literature. Women had restricted liberties in all three cultures (as attested in the legal material and historical sources), yet the three literary corpora present a different picture. Female assertiveness is particularly prominent in Irish and Scandinavian texts, where women often directly influence the course of events, while their Anglo-Saxon counterparts assume a more passive role. At the same time, however, all these women are also tragic figures who try to find their place in a violent male world. |
