Leerdoelen Students will have developed a conceptual understanding of literature gained from the analysis of one particular topos or theme in a selection of premodern texts. They will be able to approach premodern texts and their historical and cultural contexts from a number of theoretical angles.
Omschrijving This course allows students to pursue a special topic in premodern literature and culture in depth. In addition to studying a particular theme or topos, students will be exposed to current developments in theoretical approaches to premodern literature.

The special topic for 2021-22 is 'Beowulf and the Monstrous Tradition'. Students will read the Old English poem 'Beowulf' in its original language, paying particular attention to the role of the three monsters in the narrative and their place both in the 'Beowulf' manuscript and traditional monster lore. We will also examine descriptions of the monstrous races in a variety of texts and medieval and modern theories of alterity.
