Leerdoelen | Students will develop: 1. their theoretical knowledge of interpretation models and principles of cognitive processing that influence visual language production and perception. 2. their ability to evaluate visual language in professional contexts. 3. their understanding of the structure and coherence of CIS research (e.g., multimodal communication, document design) and its practical application. 4. their competence in the use quantitative and qualitative research methods. 5. their competence to identify and analyse complex issues in the production, evaluation and improvement of graphical (re)presentations. |

Omschrijving | In the Pictures in Professional Communication course students will set up a corpus study to describe a set of pictures in terms of their visual content. Teams of students will iteratively develop an annotation model to describe a picture corpus, along the lines of diagnosis, implementation and evaluation. The development starts with a preliminary model with which a subset of the picture corpus is annotated by each of the team members individually. Results of this process are used to improve the annotation model. Subsequently, the team members individually annotate the remainder of the picture corpus with the improved model. The model is then evaluated by calculating inter-annotator agreements (Kappa) for the annotations of the individual team members. Inter-annotator agreements are calculated using R. The agreement scores serve to finalise the annotation model with which the gold standard annotation of the corpus is produced. The annotated corpus is presented using a frequency analysis illustrated with examples from the corpus. By the end of this course students will be able to: 1. relate visual information transfer to central questions, theories and concepts of visual language, multimodal communication, document design, (e.g. medium, modality, inference, cognition, persuasion etc.) 2. describe and explain form and content relationships in visual language using theoretical models from semiotics, Gestalt theory and rhetoric as well as visual means such as composition, perspective and colour . 3. analyse, evaluate and improve visual information presentation within its professional context of use 4. develop and present improved visual (re)presentations for professional contexts in line with the outcomes of researched issues in visual presentations. |
