Leerdoelen Upon successful completion of the course unit, students are able to:

1.
Reflect upon and elucidate the concept of ‘cultural leadership’ (programme-level learning outcome 1, 2)
2.
Identify, analyse, and characterize visions and values underlying concepts of
cultural leadership (programme-level learning outcome 4)
3.
Distinguish ideological from scientific perspectives on cultural leadership (programme-level learning outcomes 1, 12)
4.
Develop and build an argument for a vision on cultural leadership (programme-level learning outcomes 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15)
5.
Present the results of their enquiries orally and in written form to an audience of
researchers (programme-level learning outcomes 16, 17, 18, 19)
6.
Provide well-argued comments on the assignments of fellow students (programme-level learning outcome 19)
Omschrijving The main goal is to help students develop a vision on cultural leadership, as well as to identify such visions (and accompanying values), especially where they tend to remain implicit (as in policy documents or in mission statements).

1. The first goal is to discuss the difference as well as the complex relation between science (theory, observation) and ideology / politics, between hypotheses and facts on the one hand and values and opinions on the other.
2. We will then discuss issues / documents (policy statements, mission statements, interviews) issued by different actors in the field of culture, in order to identify the implicitly or explicitly stated vision and values. Combining an historical dimension with contemporary issues (actuality), we will relate these to value systems and ideologies. We systematically compare different ideological perspectives in terms of value-regimes.
3. Students are then encouraged to develop and build an argument for their own vision on cultural leadership.
