Leerdoelen | Students will get a passing grade if they can show: - a critical understanding of socio-cultural differences between Canada and the US based on historical developments. - an ability to abstract, analyze and synthesize information on Canadian and American society and history. - an awareness of the different attitudes in Canada and the US to cultural differences. - that they have made adequate contributions to in-class discussions, whether as part of a group or as an individual. - an ability to communicate and write in advanced-level academic English. - an ability to write an argumentative essay comprising a clearly formulated argument about a comparative question, based on the study and analysis of a variety of opinions found in secondary literature. |

Omschrijving | In this course unit students are introduced to Canadian society from a historical and comparative perspective, focusing on transatlantic relationships with Europe as well as on the convergences and (cultural) differences between Canada and the U.S. By examining a variety of topics such as the connection between Francophone and Anglophone Canada and bilingualism, Free Trade Agreements, popular culture, media and national identity, representations of space and identity, federal and provincial politics in relation to Indigenous peoples, students will gain insight in the complexity of Canadian society and questions of identity, Canada's transatlantic allegiance, and its dynamic relationship with the U.S. | ||||||||||||||||
