Leerdoelen | Aims of the course: - To introduce students to some of the central theories and major theorists relevant to an understanding of the notions of identity in contemporary U.S. society. - To foster an intersectional understanding of the ways in which gender, race, class and regional categories shape knowledge and define identities. - To foster a thorough understanding of the socio-political work of literary texts and cultural artifacts by looking at the ways in which they interrogate categories of class and race. - To apply the critical tools of American cultural studies to relevant cultural artifacts. |

Omschrijving | This is part one of a two part course. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical and cultural texts as well as visual materials, this course will offer an interdisciplinary introduction to central concepts, major theorists, and current controversies about the notions of identity in the context of contemporary U.S. society. In particular, we will study contemporary notions of American identity as multi-dimensional political, social, cultural, and ideological constructs based on theories of social class, gender, race and region. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
