Leerdoelen  The purpose of this course is to provide a theoretical introduction to the analysis of covariance structures, or structural equation modeling as it is called, and to gain practical experience with this type of modeling using the lavaan package for R. After the course, students are able to  estimate path models, evaluate the fit, and interpret the results;  estimate confirmatory factor models, evaluate the fit, and interpret the results;  estimate structural equation models, evaluate the fit, and interpret the results;  analyze longitudinal data with structural equation models;  compare groups of respondents using structural equation models;  perform exploratory factor analyses and interpret the results;  use the R package lavaan to estimate structural equation models. 

Omschrijving  For the description and analysis of theorybased causal relationships between several variables simultaneously, it is possible to construct models that can be visualized as path diagrams. For a group of observed variables, a researcher can formulate an underlying structure of latent variables (or hypothetical constructs), and relations between them, on the basis of theoretical considerations. The observed variables may be subject to measurement error. Such a (covariance) structure is called a structural equation model. The relations between the latent variables, between observed varianbles, and between the latent and observed variables, are estimated by fitting the implied covariances by the model to the observed covariances of the observed variables. Topics in the course include: introduction to causal models, path diagrams, path analysis, confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis, model identification, model estimation, model fit evaluation and improvement, and an introduction to the lavaan package for the R software.
