The Astronomy track Quantum Universe (QU) can be followed in three different thematic specialisations. These specialisations are indicated by the following abbreviations:
- TOA: Theoretical & Observational Astronomy;
- DS: Data Science;
- I&I: Instrumentation & Informatics.

The curriculum of the Astronomy track Quantum Universe consists of 60 ECTS of courses, and -- depending on the specialisation -- either a research project of 60 ECTS, or a research project of 40 ECTS and an internship of 20 ECTS. More information about the degree programme and its curriculum is available on the Student Portal.

Courses
Each student must follow the following courses in order to successfully complete the degree programme:
- 20 ECTS of compulsory courses**, as listed above;
- 20 ECTS of Astrophysics Core Courses, chosen from the list below;
- 20 ECTS of optional courses, chosen from 1) the list of Capita Selecta courses***, or 2) the lists of optional courses accompanying the specialisations below.

** Note that the course 'Introduction to Data Science' (WMCS002-05) is mandatory for students following the Data Science (DS) specialisation. Students have to follow 25 ECTS of compulsory courses, and 15 ECTS of optional courses.
*** No more than 3 Capita Selecta courses are allowed to put on the list of graduation.

In case the student prefers to take other courses in one of the categories, he/she needs to ask permission, in advance, by the Board of Examiners.

Individual Projects
Students following the TOA or DS specialisation have to do a Master's Research Project of 60 ECTS. Students following the I&I specialisation have to do a Master's Research Project of 40 ECTS, followed by an Industrial Internship of 20 ECTS.

The courses 'Basiscursus Master Lerarenopleiding' (TEM0105) and 'Masterstage 1' (TEM0205) offer students the possibility to get acquainted with the work of a high school Physics or Mathematics teacher in the Netherlands. The courses are taught in Dutch and have to be followed simultaneously. Upon successfull completion of both courses students have the possibility to follow the post-master degree programme 'Leraar Voorbereidend Hoger Onderwijs in de Bètawetenschappen' (LVHO) where they only still have to follow 50 ECTS, instead of the normal 60 ECTS.
