Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) Define the basic elements of nuclear power production and technology; 2) Describe the physical processes and the different components of a nuclear power plant; 3) Explain different elements of nuclear power technology, such as safety, environmental and health related issues; 4) Apply the laws of physics to solve neutron physics problems; 5) Formulate the important engineering challenges for generation IV and fusion reactors (including concepts of plasma physics). |

Omschrijving | The aims of this lecture course are to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of nuclear fission energy (the concepts, systems, safety and applications) and enable them to apply such knowledge in future considerations about nuclear energy. The subject of fusion reactors will be approached via examples such as the Sun, the JET and ITER projects and the future DEMO reactor. | ||||||||||||||||

Entreevoorwaarden | No prior knowledge is required. Mandatory presence: Yes, all students should be present during the presentations, as one of the goals is to encourage discussions. Failure to attend without a valid reason will lead to a lower score, according to the rubrics used for grading. |
||||||||||||||||
Opmerkingen | Pass mark: The presentation counts for 30% towards the final grade. The intermediate test and final written exam count for 20% and 50%, respectively. The final grade should be higher than 5.5. The intermediate test/mid-term exam will take place during a lecture. Second examiner for the course: prof. dr. N. Kallantar-Nayestanaki (he will peer review the tests). Others teachers/researchers from the institute are invited to attend the presentations. Their assessment is taken into account in the grading. |
