Omschrijving Do religions provide a foundation of right and wrong, or could we find such a foundation elsewhere, independently of religion? Even within religious traditions many thinkers have held that religion does not so much provide a foundation of right and wrong but a powerful motivation of doing what is perceived as right, independently of religion.
The history of modern philosophical ethics can be read as a sustained attempt to eject religious convictions from the field of morality, but at the same time there are clear signs that the cultural and conceptual heritage of religion\s has remained important along the way. Could religious / theological ethics play a more overt constructive role in the public realm today?
The course follows a historical line. It traces the development of ethics from the days of Plato to post-colonial voices today, and students are invited to evaluate from the perspective of ethics a current policy brief. On the way, the course sheds light on issues that are important also for other areas of the religious studies / theology curriculum, such as secularisation, freedom of religion and/or belief, the importance of world-views for confronting ecological disaster, and religion and health.
