Omschrijving Overview of the History of Christianity from ca. 300-ca. 1500 with a focus on the making of Christian traditions and the connection to other religions in the regions in which Christianity functioned. In the course, we will reflect on the role of cultural traditions in the making of Christian theology and practice, and upon its dynamic nature. We will discuss how what is seen as a part of the tradition varies according to context, as determined by relations of power and other aspects. The continuities and discontinuities between the late antique, medieval and early modern past and what current denominations in Christianity claim as their tradition will be discussed. The course will be enhanced by seminars on a special subject – the history of exegesis in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages -, in which students will be able to hone their interpretive skills.
Throughout the course, the city of Cologne will be a frequent example of the developments mentioned above. This is in preparation for the next course in Christianity i.e. Christianity from the Reformation to the present, in which a fieldtrip to Cologne will be a most important ingredient.
