Leerdoelen The course provides insights how to understand and analyze collective citizenship from different theoretical perspectives, and how to work as a planner with societal energy in different roles, in the context of spatial transformation.

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:
Knowledge and Understanding
• Conduct actor analysis: to describe institutions and decision-making processes relating to socio-spatial changes and place them in the context of broader administrative and social trends and processes (actor analysis)
• Acknowledge political tensions / complexity: to recognize that, given the diversity and complexity of the relationship between society and the spatial environment, politics and friction are concomitant with planning

Applying Knowledge and Understanding
• Conduct research: independently to conduct research on spatial issues, decision-making processes and the societal consequences of solutions
• Design research and report on it: be able to formulate a question, produce a research design, select and apply research methods, and report on these clearly and comprehensively
• Develop solutions: to design creative and intelligent effective and realistic policy solutions (to spatial issues) which take account of societal, sustainability, and administrative aspects

Forming Judgements
• Critical and ethical reflection: to reflect critically on ethical and normative aspects of spatial problems and solutions and how these impact on people and communities
• Integration ethics in research: to integrate ethical, normative and expressive modes of thought within scientific thinking
• Reflect on application: to reflect on possible applications and limitations of science in general, and of planning in particular

• Sensitivity in dealing with societal issues and in multi-cultural contexts: show sensitivity and respect for different societal opinions, and acquire inter-cultural communication skills

Learning Skills
• Discern relevant information: purposefully derive relevant information from large quantities of text with a large variety of intentions
• Critically follow developments in the field: critically staying in touch with developments in the planning profession, in an independent and critical way

• Critical engagement with new ideas: deal with new develop-ments in the planning profession in an inquisite and critical way
• Work with a scientific attitude: work with a scientific attitude in societal and scientific professions
Omschrijving We see the emergence of citizens and entrepreneurs who collectively take the lead in spatial transformation in the c0ntext of place-based development. Examples are initiatives in revitalizing of public space, self-governance in energy production, food, health-care or landscape maintenance, or fostering social cohesion in neighborhoods and other meaningful everyday places. The course:
1) provides insight in theoretical concepts such as sustainability, transition and transformation
2) analyzes the engagement of society in spaces of interaction and the changing role of spatial planning, resulting in new coalitions and institutional arrangements.
3) pays specific attention to the (inter)subjective aspects of planning.
