Leerdoelen This course focuses on 1) acquiring the methodological skills to describe and analyse demographic, economic geographical and social data from cross-sectional and longitudinal data, 2) managing data using statistical software package STATA, including opening data, creating new variables, dealing with missing values, et cetera, and 3) acquiring the skills to give a critical assessment of the use of methods in the scientific literature.

After the course, students are able to
- select the appropriate method(s) for analyzing research questions
- detect data problems in data sources using statistical software package STATA
- provide solutions for data problems
- apply statistical techniques and diagnostic tests in statistical software package STATA
- explain and write syntax in statistical software package STATA
- assess methods in the scientific literature taking into account statistical techniques and diagnostic tests.
Omschrijving This course focuses on models for the description and analysis of demographic and geographic events and relationships, such as linear regression, logistic regression and event history models. Students will obtain substantial knowledge and practical experience concerning statistical models for the analysis of discrete and continuous time processes in life domains such as fertility, employment, migration, and health. As quantitative data often contain a temporal dimension, the required statistical tools receive special attention.
Through computer lab sessions and assignments, using empirical survey data from social surveys such as the Demographic and Health Surveys and analyzing them in a statistical software package (STATA), students acquire a working knowledge for the choice, specification, estimation and interpretation of various models. Most examples during the course are related to topics in demographics and economic geography, but methods can be applied to other (social) fields of research.

Entreevoorwaarden It is assumed that students are familiar with concepts related to demography and economic geography. Furthermore, students are expected to have basic knowledge of Statistics and Mathematics.
Opmerkingen Compulsory course unit for students Population Studies and students Economic Geography. Elective course unit for all other MSc. programmes, except for the MSc. Real Estate Studies.
