-------
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 2021-2022: the minor programme Neuroscience has reached its maximum capacity. There is NO waiting list. If the minor is full, you may come back later to check whether empty spots are available when enrolled students have deregistered later on.
-------
This minor programme is intended for students without specific prior education in the field of Neuroscience. The minor is divided in two blocks of 15 EC = total 30 EC. Participation in the first block (Neuroscience) is an entry requirement for participation in the second block (Behavioural Neuroscience).
There is a maximum capacity of 50 UG students.
There is also an extra capacity of 5 non-UG students. However, these 5 spots have already been filled for academic year 2021-2022. Non-UG students can reserve a place on the waiting list.
During the course Behavioural Neuroscience, students participate in the course Minorcongress (WBBY023-05) (The course Minorcongress is NOT a part of the minor Neuroscience, but in this case part of the course Behavioural Neuroscience).
Students from the bachelor's programmes Biology and (old curriculum) Life Science & Technology are not allowed to follow this minor due to overlap with their Bachelor's programme.
Registration starts on 19 May 2021. Information about the registration process (for UG students) can be found here. |

1 | Behavioural Neuroscience | WBBY010-15 |
This course is a follow up / extension of the 15 EC course Neuroscience in semester Ia. The initial part consists of lectures in behavioral neuroscience and a few practicals on sensory physiology (smell and taste) and the effects of specific behavior on the electro-encephalogram (EEG). The lectures are assesed by a written exam (mc and open questions), the practicals by a report. In the second (problem based learning) part, students get acquainted with a selected field in behavioral neuroscience, a.o. eating disorders, stress and agression, depression, learning and memory, social withdrawal. They present an article (individual assignment) and design, present and write a research proposal (assignment for group of 3/4).
In the last part of the minor in January, the students take part in the minor congress of the bachelor Biology. For details, check the Ocasys page of the Minor Congress. |

2 | Neuroscience | WBBY009-15 |
This 15 EC minor course is an introduction in the field of Neurosciences. It contains lectures, practicals and special assignments covering a broad field of functional neuroscience. The lectures and practical courses are mainly taught by lecturers from the Neurobiology section of the research institute GELIFES (Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences). The lectures focus on a selection of the most important principles in neuroscience with special emphasis on the underlying mechanisms in the neurobiology and physiology of behaviour. The theoretical part is assessed in two partial examinations. The lectures are accompanied by a series of practicals focusing on topics such as the functional anatomy of the brain, control of the autonomic nervous system (the baroreceptor reflex), neural stimulation of skeletal muscle and a computer-assisted experiment on the effect of antidepressive drugs treatment during pregnancy. Masterclasses from guests lecturers from other disciplines (medicine, neurolinguistics and psychology) form the basis of project based learning activity thereafter and in the final week of the course the students will participate in a public debate on hot topics on the crossroads of neuroscience and society |
