Omschrijving	This course will allow the students to gain an overall view of star formation in galaxies through cosmic time, from very high redshifts to the present day, from the reading and discussion of recent literature in the field. The relation between star formation, gas consumption and stellar mass assembly will be discussed in detail, along with the star-formation/AGN connection, making emphasis on the many open questions existing in this field. Observational techniques to study star formation in galaxies at different wavelengths will be reviewed through literature articles, as well as the star formation process within the context of theoretical galaxy formation models. A set of recent publications from main Astronomy journals will be selected by the lecturer, and all of them will be mandatory reading for the students. Some publications will be discussed by the students in the class, after a summary made by the lecturer, who will moderate the discussion and propose guiding questions. For other publications, the students will prepare presentations, and guide the subsequent discussion themselves. There will be an introductory presentation given by the lecturer on the first day. At the end of this first lecture, the paper presentation schedule will be arranged with the students. The remaining lectures will consist of: literature discussion guided by the lecturer, with active student participation. student presentations of scientific papers. In these lectures, the students will also lead the discussion sessions following the presented papers.
