Leerdoelen The general aim of this course is to give students an overview of the neurobiological and physiological mechanisms of complex behavior and the ways in which defects in these mechanisms may lead to psychopathology.

Learning outcomes (knowledge):
• an understanding of psychobiology as an integrative science, from behavior to molecule and vice versa.
• knowledge of the neurobiology and physiology of waking and sleeping, stress, anxiety, aggression, and eating behavior.
• knowledge of the mechanisms underlying psychopathologies such as mood disorders and eating disorders.
• knowledge of the major experimental methods and techniques in behavioral neuroscience.

Learning outcomes (skills and training):
• the ability to critically read and interpret scientific literature and its underlying assumptions.
• the ability to translate and integrate knowledge to formulate new questions and hypotheses.
• the ability to communicate complex science by means of a written report and oral presentation.
Omschrijving The lectures discuss the following topics from the textbook:
• Brain states of waking, sleep and dreaming
• Stress and stress disorders
• Emotions and affective disorders
• Ingestive behaviour, anorexia and obesity
• Drug abuse

During the problem-based learning part of this course, groups of eight students will independently study specific psychobiological questions that are most often connected to the main lectures. They will conduct a literature survey, formulate a specific research question, write a research proposal and prepare an oral presentation about their subject.

Toetsvorm
(Digitally written exam (multiple choice and open questions), problem-based learning assignments (written report, oral presentations). Final mark = 65% written exam, 35% problem-based learning. Written exam must be at least a 5.5.)
