Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Describe the forces that drive the evolution of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.
2. State the nature and dynamics of genetic variation within prokaryotic and eukaryotic populations and species in relation to their environment
3. Describe how the complexity of the genome can accommodate (promote and constrain) the adaptation of different organisms (prokaryotes and eukaryotes)
4. Define evolutionary processes, such as selection at different organizational levels, genetic drift, and horizontal gene transfer
5. Assess how evolutionary processes affect genomic changes and can they be recognized at the genomic level
6. Asses how to use metagenomics to analyze complex prokaryotic communities
Omschrijving The aim of the course is to present how the complexity of the genome of prokaryotes and eukaryotes, in relation to the complexity of the ecosystem, affects ecological and evolutionary processes at different levels. A central theme is how variation at the level of genotypes leads to variation in phenotypes, in interaction with environmental settings. Students will be familiar with population genetic processes such as mutation, genetic drift, horizontal gene transfer, migration and selection. They will learn how these processes become evident at the genetic level and can lead to evolutionary changes and constraints. They will be instructed to evaluate how selection can act at different organizational levels, such as genic and individual selection.
They will acquire knowledge about metagenomics and genomic techniques and how these can be used to address ecological and evolutionary questions on prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

(There is a written (open book) exam on the theory part (50% of grade, minimum grade 5.5) at the end of the second week. The other 40% of the grade will be based on the group presentations, given at the end of the course (minimum grade 5.5). The final 10% of the grade refers to the participation during lectures, practical work and presentation. Presentation needs to be performed before the grade can be given.)

Opmerkingen During the presentations the presence is mandatory.
During the lectures and practical work the presence is not mandatory, however the grade depends for 10% on student participation during the lectures.
The open book written exam is mandatory and a minimal grade should be 5.5. the possibility to resit exam will be planned in the schedule

The course units assumes prior knowlegde and skills, acquired from the following other course units: Genetics, Ecology and Evolution, Microbiology, Evolutionary Ecology, Research Skills in Ecology and Evolution, Research Skills in Life Sciences
