Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. state the different basic components of food 2. describe the uptake and transport mechanisms of nutrients 3. explain the relation between energy metabolism and health 4. explain how food influences energy metabolism and how disturbances in energy metabolism can lead to the development of chronic diseases 5. evaluate food composition on the possible consequences on health 6. summarize scientific literature and indicate in own words the relevance of these studies on the current knowledge in the field metabolism, nutrition and health. |

Omschrijving | A well balanced diet promotes the functioning of the body and prevents diseases. But what is a healthy diet and what is the connection between nutrition and metabolism? How can disturbances in energy metabolism contribute to the development of chronic diseases? These are the central questions in the course Food and Metabolism. During the course, you will learn the role of nutrition and metabolism in the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In the lectures, we will address the structure, function and metabolism of macronutrients. In addition, you will gain more insight into the regulation of metabolism. In the work lectures, you will gain a deeper insight into how specific nutrients and/or disturbances in energy metabolism contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic diseases. Under the supervision of an expert, you will perform a literature study in the area of food and metabolic diseases. The results of the literature study will be presented by a presentation and in the form of an essay. |
