Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1.Analyze the complexity of the problem context of an interdisciplinary area from a socio-technical point of view via literature review and/or stakeholder analysis. 2.Define and argue an adequate system description, problem definition, and research and/or design goal based on the given analysis. 3.Propose and justify appropriate research or design method(s) and research (sub)question(s). 4.Propose, justify and validate methods/tools/techniques and the application hereof to be used for answering the defined research (sub)question(s) thereby reaching the defined goal and solving the defined problem. |

Omschrijving | In groups and individually, students prepare the problem synthesis phase and operationalization of a typical IEM project. The first part of the course unit consists of three lectures and three Team Based-Learning (TBL) sessions where the concepts are rehearsed with individual and group work. The second part of the course unit corresponds to smaller group sessions towards the design of a research plan. Literature from papers and book chapters provides a theoretical background to adequately handle the assignments, and written and oral examinations. TBL sessions consist of three parts: an individual written examination (30 min), a group written examination (30 min), and a group TBL case (120min). A total of three TBL workshops are organized during the first five weeks of the course unit. All TBL individual written examinations should be sufficient, i.e. >5.5, and it is the requirement to continue with the second part of the course unit. During the lecturing period, key concepts, methods and tools for research and design methodologies are introduced. Five weeks after the completion of the lectures and TBL workshops, a synthesis case is worked out in different sessions and during three weeks. The final deliverable is a so-called Research and Design Plan (RDP) for a specific (synthesis) case, which resembles the first stage of the IEM Bachelor Integration Project in the fourth block, third-year. A sufficient mark >5.5 on the RDP is a requirement to continue with the individual oral examination. Successfully passing of the course unit is an entrance requirement for the Bachelor Integration Project. During the course unit, setup and discussion of IEM methodology type of assignments will be done while adhering to an academic attitude that is being: o Accuracy o Consistency o Quality of reasoning/logic o Adequacy o Critical attitude o Fact- and/or evidence-based |
