Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
interpret and apply the principles of green chemistry.
explain and apply basic concepts and trends related to the role of science and technology in society (philosophy of science, ethics, technology and innovation theory and policy theory).
analyze the interdependence of science (especially green chemistry) and society using concepts from philosophy of science, ethics, technology and innovation theory and policy theory.
distinguish between scientific and ethical aspects when analyzing and discussing societal challenges related to sustainability.
decide and substantiate a course of action when faced with a moral dilemma in his/her role as a scientist as part of a broader societal context.
Omschrijving The course allows the students to develop a critical and responsible attitude towards their own role as a scientist (more specifically chemical engineer) and the consequences of their actions in a broader societal context. Students will be engaged into thinking about scientific and innovative practices that can address the global challenges of our time in a collaborative, ethical and sustainable ways. To understand the relations between science (more specifically green chemistry) and society a number of basic elements from green chemistry, ethics, philosophy of science, innovation and policy making will be introduced. During various assignments students will practice applying these elements in (the assessment of) debates, controversies and cases related to the large societal challenges of our time, including themes such as responsible research and innovation, energy and sustainability, and the role of science and engineering in it.

Opmerkingen Tutorials and presentation are mandatory. Assignments are made during the tutorials. When tutorials (and thus assignments) are missed, students fail their assignment and will need to redo the assignment. Attendance of the presentation is also required. When missing the presentation, the presentation will have to be redone in order to receive a pass.

Pass Mark:
The exam (1/3 open questions, 1/3 essay question, 1/3 multiple choice questions) will account for 100% of the grade. The tutorial assignments will need a pass grade in order to get a final grade. The presentation will get a fail, pass or bonus (+0,5 on the final grade). The presentation will have to be a pass or bonus in order to get a final grade.
