Leerdoelen General :
learn to carry out the technical design process and its associated aspects in a structured manner.

1) be able to apply HumanCentredDesign and the systematic design process.
2) be able to apply aspects that support the technical design process, including Design for Manufacturing & Assembly, House of Quality and FMEA.
3) be able to understand and produce a technical drawing (using SolidWorks).
4) be able to calculate and dimension simple parts mechanically by hand.
5) be able to calculate and dimension more complex parts using FEM.
Omschrijving Designing technical devices (for example cars, aeroplanes, robots, editing tools and household appliances) is a very challenging discipline. Designers use their knowledge and skills in the disciplines of mathematics, natural science and production, prior to building the designs, to predict how these new designs will behave. The course unit has an integrative character, as many aspects are being used in the entire design process, including project management, market analysis, user analysis, programme of needs and desires, pricing, developing concepts, choices of materials, product layout, cost price, engineering, drawing, reporting, presenting, etc. The design process should be structured to manage all these aspects and choices. This occurs by means of the systematic design process.
The lectures will address a large number of design aspects, technical drawings and calculating/dimensioning of technical components. The design task, whereby project teams redesign a simple technical device, will play a very important part. Project progress will be discussed weekly in a project meeting with the supervisor.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from courses like Production Techniques, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanics, Computer Aided Design & Manufacturing of the Bachelor IEM (PTL track) programme.
Opmerkingen Final grade:
Written Exam consists of two parts:
1) Mechanical calculations. A mechanical construction will be given. Calculations have to be performed to determine if construction can withstand the loads. Calculation of machine parts like bearings, spindles and transmission gears can be asked.
2) Design Process. Apply HumanCentredDesign, systematic design process and design aspects (such as Design for Manufacturing & Assembly, House of Quality and FMEA) for a given product design.

End grade = (grade written exam + grade project)/2

Technical drawing assessment should be passed

Homework assessment gives a bonus on the grade of the written exam (max. 0.5 point)
