Leerdoelen The student is able to calculate the hyperfine Zeeman shift of alkali-atoms.

The students can select the most appropriate angular momentum coupling scheme for a given atom, also in the presence of a magnetic field of a specified strength.

The students can explain Doppler-free laser spectroscopy, and schematically draw the obtained spectrum for a given hyperfine transition.

The students can apply Ramsey's separated oscillatory fields method to asses the accuracy of a Cesium fountain experiment.
Omschrijving This course will introduce you to the field of atomic, molecular and optical physics. You will learn about the forefront of current research and a number of exciting applications. The course starts with a review of the basic quantum mechanics of atoms and molecules. After heaving dealt with angular momentum coupling schemes, we will move to the interaction of atoms and molecules with external fields (electrical, magnetic and optical). Where possible, new concepts are illustrated by discussing applications and key experiments, such as magnetic resonance techniques, atomic clocks, lasers, laser cooling and trapping, tests of fundamental physics and modern spectroscopic techniques.
