Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) describe Molecular and Surface Forces relevant in Soft Biological Materials and discuss and clarify how they apply in particular cases.
2) describe structure-property relations for soft biological materials
3) apply and discuss Colloids and Interface theories in quantitative and qualitative exercises and applications.
Omschrijving The module focuses on the physical-chemical properties of interfaces (= phase boundaries) in an aqueous environment. The following topics will be examined:
water as a solvent and dispersion medium, interfacial tension, capillary phenomena, wetting, monolayers, electrostatic and electrokinetic properties, rheology, adsorption.

Based on these principles, interactions involving colloids and interfaces will be discussed. These include formation of supramolecular structures, behaviour of (bio)polymers in solution, stability of colloidal dispersions, , adsorption and adhesion of (bio)polymers and the mechanisms involved in adhesion of microorganisms and biological cells.

The module is meant for students specializing in (bio)materials science and others interested in (bio)technological and (bio)medical applications.

(Passing the course is based on a combination of the written exam (80%) and oral presentation of assigment (20%). Mark on written exam should be higher or equal to 4.5. Combined mark should be higher or equal to 5.5.)
