Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. reproduce the specific characteristics of the 3 main types of ionizing (radioactive) radiation, how to measure it and how to work safely with radioactive substances taken in to account the specific laws and legislations 2. reproduce more specific information on the most commonly used radioisotopes in biological experiments, how they are used in experiments and the biological effects of ionizing radiation 3. perform an example of a biological labelling experiment and explain the use/choice of radioisotopes in a biological experiment, clarify the necessary specific safety precautions 4. apply the obtained knowledge in a experiment set-up with radioisotopes and summarize the experiment and results in a written report. |

Omschrijving | RPO Dispersible Radioactive Materials-D is the minimum expert level which allows you to work with radioisotopes at the university and university hospital (UMCG). It is an official expert level supervised and regulated by the Dutch Government. The University of Groningen is one of the few official recognized institutes were you can obtain certificates of the official radiation expert levels. At the end of the 1st week you will HAVE to pass the RPO DRM-D test to be allowed to participate in the remainder of the course. NOTE: For the course an additional registration is needed apart from Progress for participating in an official RPO DRM-D course. Topics will include: • Radioisotope detection using X-ray film • The (advanced liquid) scintillation counter • In vitro labeling of nucleic acids and proteins • Subcellular localization of biological molecules • Radioisotopes and immunoassay • Pharmacological techniques • Biological effect of radiation The final part of the course consist of chronobiological research question regarding Melatonin using a Radioimmunoessay (RIA). The students will be their own research subjects. The results will be discussed in a concluding tutorial. |

(Multiple choice test after week 1, to obtain certification. Minimal passing grade is 5.5 (out of 10). This exam has to be passed in order to continue with the remainder of the course. A final written exam: minimal 5 out of 10 to pass. Both exams and the assessment of the practical part contribute each 1/3 to the finale grade: the final grade is the average of these 3 grades.) |

Capacity: minimum 4, maximum 24 students for the 5 ECTS course. First come, first serve. Further information will be provided one month prior to the course. (Master students who are only interested in obtaining the RPO DRM-D certificate have to contact the course coordinator for information about the other radiation courses.) |
