Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. use basics concepts of vector analysis to reformulate a static electromagnetic problem into the relevant equation needed to solve the problem
2. reformulate an electrodynamics problem into the relevant equations needed to solve problems using basics concepts of Maxwell's theory of electrodynamics
3. understand close links between electrodynamics and other fields of physics such as optics and relativity
4. use e.g. symmetry and limiting case arguments to anticipate and check solutions to problems
5. write a clear and structured report of a well-defined lab experiment
6. develop a critical attitude towards the presented material and to pose relevant questions during lectures and study groups
Omschrijving The course treats the classical theory of electric and magnetic fields due to static charges and stationary currents. The four Maxwell equations are treated starting from Faraday's law up to the law of Maxwell-Ampère. After an introduction in vector calculus, Maxwell's equations are derived and applied for stationary conditions both in vacuum and in matter. This theory is applied to obtain the electromagnetic waves, conservations laws, electromagnetic radiation and an introduction is given to the relation between the theory of electrodynamics and special relativity. The theory is elucidated by many examples, lecture demonstrations and practica. An extended set of practical exercises solidifies the knowledge of theory.

Entreevoorwaarden The course units assumes prior knowledge and skills acquired in the first semester of BcS physics study. Some parts of the math are being taught in parallel with the course.

Vector algebra
Differential and integral calculus
Complex numbers

The prior skills:
Solving equations of (mechanical) motion
Differentiation and integration
Operations with complex numbers
Opmerkingen The weighted average of the six tests (with weights of 0.1, 0.15, 0.25, 0.15, 0.25 for the 6 tests respectively) has to be higher than 5.5 to pass the theory part. The practical grade has to be higher than 6, and besides the individual requirements the combined grade has to be higher than 5.5 to pass the course.

Mandatory:
The first two (out of three) practicals have to be done within the designated space and time that is reserved for that.
