Leerdoelen Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1) describe the theoretical background of interactions of energetic particles with each other or with photons, electron or ions, using the appropriate theoretical models.
2) explain the key experimental techniques for investigation of atomic and molecular interactions and discuss their strenghts and limitations.
3) describe the application of selected interaction processes in contemporary science and technology, such as magnetic confinement fusion (ITER), cancer radiotherapy, ion beam analysis and mass spectrometry.
Omschrijving The course treats fundamental physics of interactions between atoms and molecules with photons, electrons, ions or with each other. Higher interaction energies are the focus. Addressed topics include excitation and ionization, charge exchange processes, energy deposition in condensed matter, molecular fragmentation and more.
Classical and contemporary experiments for the investigation of selected interaction processes will be presented.
Applications, such as materials analysis, astrophysics, plasma fusion, radiation therapy and radiation protection will be discussed.

The course is divided in 6 parts, each containing theoretical background, key experiments and applications.
I) Basics of atomic collisions.
II) Basics of molecular physics.
III) Charge exchange and electron capture.
IV) Photoionization and excitation.
V) Collisions with electrons.
VI) Interactions involving complex molecular systems.
