Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Analyze and explain crystallographic information concerning Bravais lattices, symmetry operators, point groups, space groups as described by the international (Herman-Mauguin) notation and describe basic structures of quasicrystals and non-crystalline solids;
2. Describe and relate structures and properties of advanced materials with reduced dimensions (from bulk to atomic scales) with particular attention to nanoparticles, nanowires/nanotubes and thin films;
3. Describe and analyze basics of first and second order phase transformations;
4. Review and describe state-of-the-art developments in the fields of complex oxide thin films, organic thin films and phase-change thin films for data storage applications;
5. Describe a few basic bottom-up (chemical) processes to produce materials with nanoscale confinement.
Omschrijving The course follows a ‘top-down’ strategy in uncovering the relationship between structure over a range of length scales and associated properties in particular electromagnetic properties. However, the main focus is on structure. In a general part attention is paid to crystals and crystallography (Bravais lattices, point and space groups, short attention to quasicrystals), structure of amorphous materials and 1st and 2nd order phase transformations in materials. After this general part the focus will shift to case studies on advanced materials based on (review) papers in international scientific journals with high standing. In these case studies topics are e.g.:
A. From 3D to 0D (from bulk to nanoparticles)
- Metallic nanoparticles (structure and properties)
- Semiconductor nanoparticles (structure and properties).
B. From 3D to 1D (from bulk to tubes and wires)
- Semiconductor nanowires
- Carbon based materials with emphasis on carbon nanotubes (but also a bit graphene, graphite, fullerenes)
C. From 3D to 2D (from bulk to thin films):
- Complex oxides, e.g. ferroic oxides with domain structures
- Phase-change materials
The emphasis of this WMPH020-05 course is on structure, in WMPH015-05 on functional properties and in WMPH021-05 on characterization.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from a basic Materials Science course such as WBPH020-05 given in the 2nd year of the BSc (Applied) Physics programme and Physical Properties of Materials 1&2 WBCH006-05 + WBCH041-05 given in the 2nd year of the BSc Chemistry programme.
