Uitgebreide vaknaam Academic Skills for the pharmaceutical sciences
Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. reproduce and describe the role of systematic reviews/meta-analyses in evidence synthesis.
2. develop a sound search strategy for systematic literature research, extract aggregated data, and perform and interpret a meta-analysis.
3. write an introduction, discussion and abstract.
4. give a scientific presentation.
5. reproduce and apply the scientific code for research integrity.
6. understand and judge elementary statistics such as statistical distributions (descriptive statistics, normal and binomial distribution, sample size calculation) and statistical testing (hypothesis testing, comparison of groups of categorical and continuous outcomes), and knows the basics of multivariable regression analysis such as linear, logistic and Cox-regression analysis and can perform multivariable logistic regression.
7. examine study data using a statistical program (R or SPSS) and can interpret the statistical output.
8. The student has a basic understanding of how a computer works (RAM, SSD/HDD, CPU and GPU), how data is stored in (cluster) computers (most common file formats) and has knowledge about most common data structures and variables types (from desktop to cloud computing);
9. The student is knowledgeable about data management, security and privacy of data (FAIR management, ELSI, GDPR).
Omschrijving To acquire and apply basic academic skills including systematic literature review, writing (parts of) research articles/reports, presenting research, research integrity and to refresh and deepen basic knowledge of medical statistics related to the design and analysis of pharmaceutical/medical research projects. To carry out statistical analyses using relevant software (SPSS or the R package), with emphasis on the interpretation and understanding of statistical methods. Further, to have a basic understanding of how a computer works, how data is stored, and to be able to explain which software and hardware environments are suitable for specific data sets and to be knowledgeable about data management, security and privacy of data.

The following questions will be central:
1. How to develop a sound rationale and research question, and how to systematically search and summarize literature?
2. How to present a research project?
3. How to write an introduction, discussion and abstract for a scientific report?
4. How to apply the University Groningen code of conduct on integrity issues?
5. How to apply statistical methods and interpret the results in a valid way?
6. How to structure and set up a data collection that is well structured and secure?

Topics: (1) systematic review/meta-analysis, (2) presenting background, aims, tables and figures, and discussion, (3) academic writing of abstract, introduction and discussion, (4) application and interpretation of statistical analyses: (a) introduction to R or SPSS: descriptives and graphs, (b) parametric and non-parametric tests (including K-M), estimates, and confidence intervals, (c) correlation and the linear regression model, (d) logistic regression and Cox regression (e) modelling assumption and diagnostics, (f) common pitfalls, and statistical inference. (5) How (5) How a computer works (RAM, SSD/HDD, CPU and GPU), how data is stored in (cluster) computers (most common file formats) and secured.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from (BSC Life Sciences, BSc Pharmacy ), and Medical Statistics/Biostatistics elementary course at BSc level.
Approx. 25 students from the MSc degree programme MPS and approx. 15 students from the MSc degree programme Pharmacy are participating in the course unit. The course unit is compulsory for MPS and is an elective for Pharmacy. The course unit prepares students for a research project in Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences or Pharmacy.
Opmerkingen Students from Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences have priority over students from other degree programmes.

This course overlaps with Scientific Writing (WMBM013-05) and Data Science in Biomedicine (WMBM023-05). Students therefore aren't allowed to take Academic Skills + either of those two courses.
