Leerdoelen The student has up to date knowledge on molecular mechanisms of drug-induced toxicology.
At the end of the course the student is able to
1) explain various toxicokinetic mechanisms underlying drug-induced toxicity
2) explain various toxicodynamic mechanisms underlying drug-induced toxicity
3) analyse species and organ selectivity of drug toxicity based on toxicodynamic and toxicokinetic determinants of toxicity
4) explain how several molecular toxicological mechanisms can interfere with cellular homeostasis and predict the body’s reaction to this
5) elucidate the molecular mechanism of toxicity induced by selected drugs by studying recent scientific literature
6) effectively communicate the results of the literature study in a written assignment (essay)
7) effectively present the theory of the textbook and studied scientific literature in an oral presentation
Omschrijving Toxic effects of drugs on the cellular level can be mediated by various different molecular mechanisms, and can be characterised by various biomarkers. The student acquires knowledge on these mechanisms and biomarkers by lectures, text book and literature study and by exchanging the results with other students.

(The final mark is determined as follow: written exam: 40% of the final mark, book chapter presentation: 10% of the final mark, essay: 40% of the final mark, essay presentation: 10% of the final mark. All marks have to be at least 5, the average mark should be >5.5 to pass the course. To assess the mark for the essay and the book presentation a rubric is used. All the scheduled lectures (accept for the question hour) are mandatory. Absence only allowed with permission of the course coordinator. Consequence can be that parts of the course cannot be graduated.)

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from the course Metabolism and Toxicology and Pharmacokinetics, both bachelor second year Pharmacy, or equivalent.
Opmerkingen Approximately 12 1st-year students from the master program MPS are participating in the course unit. The course
is also open to students from the master program Pharmacy (2nd year) (approximately 8 students). MPS
students have priority, a maximum of 30 students is allowed in the course.
The course unit is compulsory for MPS students following the drug toxicology and translational technology track and is
an elective for students of other MPS tracks and Pharmacy students.
The course unit prepares students for a research project in the area of drug disposition and toxicology in
which the learning objectives attained are required as prior knowledge.
