Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1.reproduce the rules for working according to VMT (Safe Microbiological Techniques) and show that he/she can observe these VMT rules while working in the laboratory. 2.state how microorganisms spread. 3.identify certain actions in the lab that entail biological risks and clarify how these risks can be mitigated. 4.describe how microorganisms can be killed or removed and identify the potential pitfalls of disinfection and sterilization. 5.apply aseptical and purifying techniques. 3) explain why certain actions in the lab entail biological risks and how these risks can be mitigated. 4) explain how microorganisms can be killed or removed and understands the potential pitfalls of disinfection and sterilization. 5) apply aseptical and purifying techniques. |

Omschrijving | This basic course teaches the students how to work safely with microorganisms and materials which can contain microorganisms and why you should do this. The course will lead to a certificate needed to be allowed to work in an ML-I laboratory (VMT certificate). The course includes a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part consists of lectures and an e-learning. Theoretical part: During the course, but better just before the course, the UMCG e-learning module (Biological Agents, module ML-I) will be followed and completed by passing a test. The module gives the student the basic knowledge for working with microorganisms. The lectures will build on the e-learning and discuss examples from daily work and the application of law and regulations in institutions such as the UMCG. Practical part: Techniques to safely deal with microorganisms. Working asceptically. Inoculating and purifying by sub culturing of bacteria cultures or samples. Determining the degree of contamination of air. Survival of a model microorganism on clothing. The formation of aerosols. Autoclave validation with a biological indicator. Test effectiveness of hand washing and hand disinfection. Disinfection of surfaces. How to deal with spills. Determination of bacteria in a mixture. Analysis of normal human microbiota present in students. |

Entreevoorwaarden | The course unit assumes the student has basic lab skills (i.e. using a pipet, using disposables, preparing experiments, recording results). The course unit is compulsory for master students Biomedical Sciences and Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences who have not obtained a Safe Microbiological Technique certificate (VMT in Dutch). Students need this certificate before they start their research project. |

Opmerkingen | This course is given twice. In period 1a and period 1b. Please double-check which edition you have enrolled for and attend that edition - if you've signed up for the 1b course, you cannot simply show up for the 1a course. Max capacity: 24 students. This is a MSc. Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences course unit: see student portal for priority regulations in place. Attendance at both the lectures and the practical is required !! Lectures and practicals: UMCG, Ant. Deusinglaan 1, Groningen No mark will be given. The final result of the course will be passed or failed. To pass the course the student will have to pass the E-test of the E-learning Biological Agents and pass the assessment of the practical work. When the student has passed the course a VMT-certificate will be awarded. All parts are mandatory. When missing a part no certificate will be awarded |
