Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Describe and interpret the basic theory and working principles of microfluidic devices.
2. Explain and critically assess the characteristics and performance of typical examples of microfluidic devices.
3. Apply the basic theory and working principles of microfluidic devices to develop innovative solutions for their promising uses in chemical and energy conversion, biotechnological, physics or other non-conventional applications.
4. Work in a group and demonstrate their professional skills towards completing the microfluidic device design and its performance evaluation for the target applications in both writing and oral presentation formats in English.
Omschrijving In this course, the following subjects will be treated:

- Basic concepts and applications of microfluidics
- Micro- and nanofabrication techniques for microfluidic devices
- Transport in microfluidic devices
- Microfluidic reactors for chemical and energy conversion
- Microfluidic devices for pharmaceutical analysis
- Microfluidics for biotechnological applications
- Microfluidic tools for physical research
- Microfluidics for non-conventional applications

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge and skills acquired from the bachelor degree programme in mechanical engineering or other closely related degree programmes, especially from course topics on fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, (bio)chemical reactor engineering.
