Leerdoelen This course is intended for students who are interested in the practical application of the theoretical foundations of Waves and Optics to the design and analysis of applications in the field of optical engineering. The course aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the involved techniques, applicable theory, design approaches, system considerations and connected disciplines.

At the end of the course students are able to:

LO1 identify and understand the applicable theory and physical principles related to a particular optical design
LO2 explain the operation of optical systems representative to the examples given in the course
LO3 model and analyze the optical properties of characteristic optical elements
LO4 design and evaluate a basic optical system derived from a set of user requirements
Omschrijving In this course students will learn how the underlying physical principles of waves and optics can be applied to the design and analysis of optical systems and engineering solutions. The course provides a comprehensive overview of key optical theory relevant to engineering optical systems. This includes topics like geometrical and physical optics, aberration theory, diffraction and propagation, interference and Fourier optics, all from an applied point of view. Furthermore a basic introduction to the techniques involved in designing optical systems will be given.
During the course a wide range of practical applications, instruments and techniques will be presented as case studies (complemented by a few guest lectures/seminars from industry and research institutes) in areas like imaging, spectroscopy, metrology, alignment, illumination, and image processing. In this way students will learn the design rationale behind optical instruments, recognize the underpinning theory, and be able to explain its operation.
Complementary to the lectures, a series of computer aided design and simulation tutorials will be given, utilizing state-of-the-art optical design software, where students will work on exercises covering the topics and theory covered during the lectures. In addition students will get a final project assignment, where they will work in small teams on an optical design problem, with an intermediate review and final project presentation and design report.
At the end of the course students will understand the theoretical foundations of applied optics, be able to apply them to explain and analyse the physical behaviour of optical systems, and be able to design basic optical systems.
