Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1) deduce the most relevant processes in the field in marine ecosystems typical for the Mediterranean rocky shores (and Europe).
2) design new research on marine ecosystem processes and interactions through literature research and field observations.
3) conduct their own designed research in practice through field and laboratory research techniques.
4) concisely report about the results and conclusions from self-performed fieldwork (research project) in a scientific paper, with extensive reference to relevant literature.
5) present their own project and peer review each other’s work.
Omschrijving A–GENERAL INTRODUCTION AND LECTURES=The first period will consist of a series of lectures to introduce the various habitats and ecological processes relevant to Mediterranean rocky shores (MRS), as well as potential topics for research projects that can be carried out in the field.
B–RESEARCH PLAN=In preparation of the practical part in the field, students will be assigned to groups of 3-4 students on a research topic of their choice. Next, each group will write a brief research proposal that at least contains (1) a general introduction, (2) research questions, (3) hypotheses and (4) a proposed approach/methodology. To finalize this part, each group will present its research proposal, and submit the research plan to the supervisors.
C–FIELD COURSE=The practical part of the field course will be conducted at the ‘Station de Recherche Sous-marine et Oceanographiques’ (STARESO) near Calvi at the north-west cape of the Isle of Corsica. First, the ecosystem, its habitats, species and essential processes will be introduced via a series of DIY excursions. Based on these experiences, each student group will evaluate and modify its research plan. In the following days, each group will execute its research plan. Field- and labwork following from the research topics will include exploration & identification of local underwater flora & fauna; investigating functional diversity, functional ecology and ecological interactions. Fieldwork will be performed in the direct vicinity of the research station, lab work will be done at the Stareso wet and dry labs. Following the practical investigations, first analysis will already be performed at the station. Initial results will be discussed in group meetings. The field course also includes daily progress meetings with students and staff (every morning at 9 am).
D–PEER REVIEW=Critically review the Conclusions and Scientific Discussion section of report-papers of fellow students, and take in and process critical review of own work.

Opmerkingen FINANCES: Although the course is heavily subsidized by the Marine Biology program, this course needs a substantial financial commitment from the participating students (estimated between 600 and 700 €). The travel to and from Corsica is not included in the finances and must be paid for and arranged by the students themselves.

DIVE EXCURSIONS in the ‘Golfe de la Revellata’:
During the field period at STARESO a few dive excursions will be organised under supervision of dive instructors from the institute. Students are allowed to participate when they are able to show their personal dive certificate (e.g. NOB*, PADI-OW, etc), a valid medical clearance (less than 1 yr old) and a diving log book showing their experience. The dive instructors decide on allowance for participation of the dive excursions and on group composition.
