Omschrijving | In this course the students learn to work out independently and talk about a subject concerning how mathematics is used in problem solving in other disciplines and/or environments. Subjects and references will be provided by staff members in mathematics and applied mathematics and reflect the full breadth of the research in the research groups in mathematics and applied mathematics. Each student will choose one subject in the first lecture. The student works out the chosen subject and gives an oral presentation on the subject. Moreover each student has to chair the presentation of a fellow student. During the preparation of the presentation the students can contact the staff member who provided the subject for questions. The oral presentations take 30 minutes plus 5 minutes for questions from the audience concerning the scientific contents plus 10 minutes for feedback. The feedback will be given orally and by feedback forms filled in by the peer students. The chair has to conduct the 15 minutes of questions and feedback after each presentation. The chair moreover has to write a summary of maximally two pages of the oral feedback given by the peers including his/her own views and provide the presenter and the coordinators with this summary. The presenter has to write a reflection on how his/her talk went taking into account also the summary of the chair. The coordinators collect the feedback forms and use the results together with their own assessment to fill in one feedback form including the final grade for the presentation. The feedback form is then given to the presenting student (a copy will be kept for the files. The presentations start no earlier than in week 3 of the course. In the first lecture the feedback forms will be shown to the students and the criteria for the assessment will be explained. The active attendance of the presentations counts toward the final grade (see assessment). |
