Leerdoelen 1. The principles and methods of the Systems Engineering discipline, and the basic steps of system design and implementation in conjunction with the concept of “program design” (coupled to project management), and the guidelines to program management and assessment. The students should be in the end able to judge themselves how these principles are applied in realistic system engineering design project settings.
2. The necessity and the principles of functional design. Also, the importance of the centricity of the functional architecture for any system specification. The students should be in the end able to evaluate a project on its use of functional design and recognize the centricity of functional architecture, or criticize the lack of it.
3. What leads to system failure, typical design flaws, the caveats of complex interactions between components and the pitfalls of emergent behaviour, and how to design for safety and reliability, fail-safe functions and components, built-in redundancy, and also the principles behind the specification assessment, model verification, component testing, overall validation, and (legal) certification of complex systems. The students should be able to incorporate in the design the typical generic fail-safe elements, and in the end, be able to develop novel elements that are adapted to the task at hand.
4. The importance of applicability of component simulation, in the context of the system’s physical architecture and operational architecture. The students should be able in the end to use (partial) simulation models that have been proposed for some of the components in the physical architecture.
Omschrijving This course addresses the need for all industrial engineering professionals to understand the interdisciplinary and cross-functional nature of Systems Engineering (SysEng), and the benefits of following a sound SysEng process. The basic SysEng definitions and concepts and the description of the SysEng program design and management are introduced first. The activities and tools for implementing and managing the SysEng process during various phases of the system life cycle, and the interactions between SysEng and other disciplines/functions are discussed. A case-study based project gives students the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge to analyse, specify, design, and even simulate parts of a complex system.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from all the previous courses in the IEM master program (this being an integrative course, which is supposed to teach how the all the previous knowledge accumulated in the 4 years of study applies in large project designs). However, being elective for other programmes, the level of prior knowledge is not strictly normative, any student with a bachelor in FES can follow the course.

This course has a limited capacity (max 125 students).
