Omschrijving | Simulation is a much used tool for logistic modelling and analysis of operations in (service) industry. Its benefits rely on the presence of a computer model that allows for representing existing or would be operations over time in a realistic way. This includes modelling of uncertainties as they may arise in any industrial system, such as, illness of staff, machine failures, fluctuating demand, issues concerning product or process quality etc. The course consists of two parts. The first part concerns simulation basics. It first familiarizes students with model coding, by exploring and applying a simulation tool. Next, starting from a coded model, it shows how experiments - concerning alternative system configurations - are to be set-up. The second part of the course relates simulation use to industrial practice, assuming use of simulation to be part of a project. Key issues addressed concern the definition of a conceptual model capturing modelling objectives and model contents, data collection and analysis, model validation, and decision support, i.e. reporting study findings. |
