Vaknaam Research Internship/Research Project 2
Niveau(s) master
Voertaal Engels
Periode semester II
(dit vak wordt ook buiten deze periode aangeboden; zie opmerkingen)

Uitgebreide vaknaam Research Internship/Research Project 2
Leerdoelen Aim:
By completing the research project, a student learns to organize, execute and complete independent scientific research at MSc level.
In the project, the student is challenged to apply methods, theory and tools from the EES curriculum.
Beyond application, the work may involve implementing, tailoring, if not adaptation, of known methods and theory to suit the problem at hand.

Learning outcomes:
After the master research project a student is, under limited supervision, able to:
- design, plan and conduct a scientific research project.
- find, select and interpret relevant scientific information.
- organize and correctly interpret data collected during the project.
- present and defend his/her results in English by means of a written report as well as a presentation to an academic and professional audience.
- act in an ethical, scientific, professional fashion.
Omschrijving In a thesis project, we can distinguish three phases:
1. Intake and development of the project, writing research proposal
2. Execution of the project
3. Completion of the project including colloquium and writing thesis.

The research internship/research project 2 can be internally or externally.

On the student portal master EES the midterm form (see also below) and the assessment form (see also below) and more information is available.

Midterm evaluation and Final assessment
When a student registers for the research project the study progress form has to be completed and the topic of the project as well as the dates of the start meeting, the midterm evaluation and the final assessment are determined.
The student has to make an appointment with the supervisor for the midterm evaluation. The aim of this evaluation is to know whether the student is on schedule and to define the points of improvement for the remainder of the research project. The midterm form has to be completed and submitted according to the instructions on the form.
At the end of the research project the project will be assessed by two examiners, following the criteria that are mentioned on the assessment form. The supervisor will explain the assessment to the student. The student can have a look at the thesis grading scheme to know the requirements for the different assessment criteria.

Opmerkingen Further regulations:
1. The assessment of the research project must take place at the time (end date) that is determined by the student and the supervisor before the start of the project and in accordance with the guidelines for the research project in the Master EES.
2. If the assessment cannot take place on the date agreed, the student must notify the first supervisor and send a request to the board of examiners to postpone the deadline (for a maximum of 10% of the total time) with an argumentation why the student can not meet the deadline. When this request is approved a new deadline is set by the board of examiners.
3. Before or on the agreed end date the project will be assessed and when the assessment criteria are not met an insufficient grade will be registered. Then the student is offered a remediation trajectory by the supervisor and second examiner.
4. The student is offered a remediation trajectory of up to one third of the time of the original individual project period.
5. The supervisor and second examiner will agree on a new deadline in consultation with the student.
6. On the deadline of the remediation trajectory, the project will be assessed again.
7. If after this deadline, the assessment does not meet the set criteria, the project will be assessed with an insufficient grade again. The student will have to perform another project.
