Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) Discuss the use of climate models
2) Classify types of models, spatial, temporal scale
3) Practise the use of a model in simulations
4) Describe the use of models in quantifying processes, feedbacks and in making future scenario's
5) Identify for what questions climate model are used
6) Discuss the type of simulations to be carried out with a climate model
7) Evaluate outcome of modelling assignment in light of quantifying processes and results
8) Evaluate outcome of modelling assignment in light of simulation type
Omschrijving General information. Climate Modelling (CM) is a method to address climate (change) with respect to identifying mechanisms, feedbacks, past changes and future changes. It is an essential tool to gain insight in global, regional and local changes in climate and the associated processes and feedbacks. It is also important to make reliable scenarios of future climate that can be used for

CM will first be introduced, as to why it is an essential tool in climate studies. Various examples of climate modelling results will be shown and discussed. Also various types of climate models (from simple to advanced), each tailored for answering specific questions, will be shown, with examples. Moreover, climate model validation will be an important topic, as well as the use of parameterizations and numerics (computer science). The most important ingredient of the course is to apply climate models. The
course builds on knowledge obtained in the course Global Change.

No mandatory presence.)

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired in Global Change and from basic mathematics and physics courses.
The course unit is often followed by master thesis work at the center for isotope research (CIO), geoenergy (GEO), ocean ecosystems (OE), in which the learning objectives attained may be required as prior knowledge.

This course is also available for exchange students, but only in combination with Global Change in IIA.
Opmerkingen Maximum capacity: 25 students.

Important remark: a normal computer/laptop with usual internet is sufficient to participate in the course.
Furthermore, the assignment-sessions (usually in computerrooms) are highly recommended (but not mandatory).

Calculation final mark: The final mark will be calculated as 0.4 x written report (of both assignments) + 0.6 x written exam. The assignment will be evaluated based on the submitted report. Written exam grade = 1 + 9 (score/maximum score). The minimum grades for the report and written exam have to be 5.0. If the overall score is higher than 5.5 then the student has passed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In case of online-only teaching the grading will be different. In that case there will be no exam, just a written report about the assignment but appropriately extended in essay-like format to test the knowledge gained during the lectures and tutorials.
