Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Apply the principles of system analysis to resource use and sustainability
2. Methodologically analyze production and consumption systems
3. Distinguish sustainability as an interdisciplinary concept with various spatial & temporal implications
4. Design (more) sustainable solutions for short and longer term energy and environmental issues, using the analytical system approach
Omschrijving In this course the following integrative key concepts are discussed: (i) Sustainability on various levels of scale; (ii) Chain analysis of production/ consumption systems addressing also its spatial and temporal dimensions; (iii) Human needs and its satisfaction by technological and institutional systems; (iv) Designs, projections and predictions in the context of sustainability.
An important part of the course is acquiring practical experience by individual and group assignments.

Entreevoorwaarden Preknowledge: Bachelor in natural sciences or related field.
And: The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired in Sustainable Use of Ecosystems and Impacts of Energy and Material Systems.

1st-year master students from the EES master programme are participating in the course unit.
The course unit is compulsory for the EES master programme.
Maximum capacity: 60 students. Priority for students from the Master EES (Energy and Environmental Sciences) for whom this course is obligatory.
The course unit prepares students for the research internship/research projects in which the learning objectives attained are required as prior knowledge.
Opmerkingen Pass mark: (Average assignments grade * 60%) + (Written examination grade * 40%) > 5.5
Failure to submit assignment results in grade 1.
Minimum grade required for written examination is 5.5.

Quality assurance: Standardized evaluation of assignments using rubric and/or correction model (ideal assignment).
Prior to assessment: Two examiners review written examination. Two examiners review quality of assignments and answering models.
Second examiner reviews deliverables.

In case the assessment has to take place online, the written (digital) exam will be adjusted to an online written (digital) exam from home.
