Leerdoelen Acquiring knowledge and insight regarding the production, analysis and handling of particulate (chemical) products. Students will be able to:
1. Analyze, describe and classify powders and particulate products in terms of particle and bulk properties (e.g. particle size, shape, microstructures, density, flow, surface energy, dissolution properties), evaluate how forces (e.g. gravity, electrical and Van der Waals forces, capillary forces, friction forces) govern particle, powder and product behaviors, and appreciate safety, health and environmental aspects of powders.
2. Based on critical considerations design and apply typical unit operations such as particle formation (crystallization, spray drying), size modification (grinding, granulation, compaction), mixing and separation, filtration, settling, fluidization, drying, transport and storage.
3. Translate and implement acquired knowledge into engineering unit operations and the design of powder products.
Omschrijving Many (chemical) ingredients, and (intermediate) products are powders. This makes that particle technology includes a wide area of subjects varying from production of powders by crystallization or spray drying, formulation and shaping such powders into functional products such as granulates or tablets.
This course discusses the fundamentals of particle interactions, determination of basic properties of powders, handling and storage and the related processes leading to desired particulate products.

The student will become familiar with the characteristic mixing, transport and agglomeration properties of solid products. Analytical tools used to predict performance of particulate based products in processing operations will be discussed and the application of relationships between simple laboratory tests and large scale processing behavior will be trained.

Toetsvorm Practisch werk (PR), Schriftelijk tentamen (WE)
(The grades for three computer assignments (each weighing 20%) and one practical assignment (weighing 40%) are averaged. The final score is 1/3 of the above average and 2/3 of the exam grade, unless either of them is below 5.5, in which case the final score becomes the lowest of them. The final score is rounded to half marks. All practical (computer and experimental have to be followed). When there is no grading of one the practicals (or the writen exam), no grade will be given.)
