Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1.
Describe and discriminate important biomass feeds, biomass conversion technologies and biobased products.
2.
Relate product properties with biomass sources and conversion technology.
3.
Evaluate the basic implications of the use biomass sources and conversion technologies.
4.
Compose a well-structured scientific literature report investigating a selected biobased product topic according to a pre-described format and present the findings to a student audience.
Omschrijving This course provides and introduction to the biobased economy treating the following subjects:
1. Biobased economy introduction
2. Biomass composition and sources
3. Biofuels (first and higher generations)
4. Biobased Specification Chemicals
5. Biobased Performance Products
6. Integration: the biorefinery concept
7. Ethics and societal impact of the use of biobased products
Students will perform literature researches on assigned optics (individually and as a group) and present these in a written report and via an oral presentation.
The individual assignments will be discussed during lectures and group assignments topics will be discussed with a supervisor in progress meetings leading up to the final report and presentation.

Opmerkingen Report 1: The final report on the topic of the group assignment.

Report 2: Two individual essays (2x10%) on assigned topic(s) that relate to lecture topics.

Final presentation: The final presentation and discussion on the topic of the group assignment for a student audience. 25% group, 75% individual.

The group report requires a 5.5 or higher for a pass. A repair will be offered to students that fail.
