Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) explain and use basic and advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques in biological research
2) process, analyze and interpret fluorescence microscopy images
3) to apply the correct microscopy technique in a personally chosen research project to answer their stated research question
Omschrijving In this course students learn various aspects of modern advanced light and fluorescence microscopy techniques. The course includes basic knowledge on light microscopy, several aspects of fluorescence microscopy, including the principles of fluorescence, properties of fluorescent dyes and proteins, wide field-, confocal-, SIM-, TIRF- and spinning disc microscopy, advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques such as FRET,FLIM and FCS as well as super resolution microscopy. Additional topics include live cell imaging, image processing and analysis and artifacts in fluorescence microscopy. The course consists of a theoretical part (lectures), practicals and a short research project. Assessment is via the preparation and presentation of a poster that contains the results of the research project and a written examination

(Active participation to all practicals (first week of the course and research project) is required. No grade will be given when practicals have not been attended)
Toetsvorm Practisch werk (PR), Presentatie (P), Schriftelijk tentamen (WE)
(Written exam (70 %), practical work and poster presentation (30%). Minimum grade for exam and practicals/poster presentation is 5.5.)

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from the Cell biology course in the first year Bachelor programme Biology/LS&T. It is recommended that students follow Molecular and Cellular Microscopy (or similar, basic microscopy course) before enrolling in this course unit.
Opmerkingen There is a minimum of 10 students needed for this course. If there are less students when progress closes in March the course will be cancelled.
