Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1.Knowledge
-You will have a clear understanding of the process leading to writing a biomedical research paper/report. In overview, the main steps of this process are: 1) Thinking about and planning your research; 2) performing experiments; 3) writing the paper/report.
-You will be acquainted with rules pertaining to the proper use of words, and the proper construction of sentences and paragraphs.

2.Comprehension
-You will understand how biomedical research papers are judged by professional scientists and journals.
-You will accordingly understand which aspects need to be taken into account to increase the quality of your current report.

3.Application
-You will apply the theoretical knowledge to improve your current research report.
-You will use the theoretical knowledge in on site exercises that allow you to understand and practice the tools and rules of scientific writing.
-You will (occasionally) evaluate a peer’s manuscript with regard to the use of building blocks (words, sentences, paragraphs.

4.Analysis
-You will be able to identify the constituents of a biomedical research paper/report (building blocks and sections).
-You will be able to (re)write the sections of a research paper/report, separately.

5.Synthesis
-You will be able to overview and apply the strategy of writing a scientific research paper/report to your current report.
-You will able to synthesize the individual sections of your report into a coherent, logical and informative research paper.

6.Evaluation
-As the lectures proceed, you will step wise evaluate your own research report (and, if time allows, that of a peer).
Omschrijving Scientific Writing offers Master students in the field of Life Sciences the tools required for the preparation of a typical scientific research manuscript. This three-week course consists of daily lectures (LC), workshops (WC) and practical exercises (PR) of two hours/course day, and afternoon homework (HWO).
The workshops are intensive and interactive, and include lectures illustrating important writing skills and tools, flash exercises and work on your own research report.
Homework provides ample opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge by fine-tuning your research report on a daily basis.

The course consists of two units:
1) Building blocks of scientific writing:
-Words
-Sentences
-Paragraphs
2) Writing the sections of a scientific paper:
-Introduction
-Materials & Methods
-Results
-Discussion
-Abstract & Title
Uren per week
Onderwijsvorm Hoorcollege (LC), Opdracht (ASM), Practisch werk (PRC)
(45 hrs LC, 40 AST, 40 PRC, 15 self study)
Toetsvorm Opdracht (AST)

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from Master internships. This previous knowledge concerns the ability to write a
scientific research report in the biomedical field. A finalized report from a research internship is required to enter the course.
This course unit is not suitable for students who follow the SBP-track.
Opmerkingen Minimum 6 students, maximum 12 students
This is a MSc. Biomedical Sciences course unit: see student portal for priority regulations.
All course days are mandatory. Missing a course day implies not receiving handouts (and thus info); the item discussed on the respective day will also not be included in the final assessment (graded as 0).

The final mark will consist of
• the average mark for all assignments (70%)
• The passing mark is 6.0.
