Omschrijving | Throughout this course you will learn about the current state-of-the-art of molecular and epigenetic mechanisms driving oncogenesis, in vitro and in vivo cancer models, the current state of (immune)therapeutical approaches to treat cancer patients, and the latest in cancer diagnostics. Competence to critically read scientific literature and to put this into a broad perspective. Presentation and discussion competence. The seminal “hallmarks of cancer” review series by Weinberg and colleagues will form the starting point for this course. We will focus on 7 main themes: 1) molecular biology of cancer 2) cancer epigenetics 3) cancer immunotherapies 4) cancer metabolism 5) cancer modeling in vitro and in vivo 6) cancer diagnostics 7) cancer current clinical therapies and ongoing trials. The overarching aim will be to train students in the most fundamental molecular aspects of cancer development as well as provide the latest insights into how this knowledge can be translated into clinical applicabilities. Both introductory overview lectures followed by in-depth focused seminars will be given by UMCG PIs who are key experts in these fields in order to update students with the latest state-of-the-art in the field of oncology. In groups of 2-3 students the latest discoveries in oncology will be discussed in an interactive format taking recent key papers from the field. |
